   I wanted a FULLY automatic BB gun badly. The good: It is appears to be a very well made replica, heavy, solid, seems sturdy. Only owned it for 3 days before returning it. The bad: plain and simple it is just not fun to use. It is mostly annoying to load the BBs and the CO2 does not last that long. I was excited to get this gun and could not wait to use it. The first thing that put a bad taste in my mouth was the instructions. Call it user-error, but there wasn’t any “written” instruction about pulling the slide-back or “charging” the gun. Page 9, pic 2 showed a small graphic with an arrow pointing in the opposite direction which to me, looked like the hammer was being pulled back not the slide. Only after searching YouTube and asking a question on umarexoutlet.com did I find out that you need to “charge” the gun by pulling the slide back. I wasted (2) CO2 cartridges thinking something else was defective because of some of the negative reviews I read. After I got that part figured out, loading the BBs is sooooo annoying. You pull the spring down on the clip and push 1 BB in at a time to fill the chamber. All this as you watch a few of them fall to the floor because it relies on 1 BB to push the other in and you occasionally miss the hole. When ready to fire, I noticed that a BB would not always discharge and I had to re-seat the clip. The power is so, so but mostly the BBs bounced off of a cardboard box from 30 feet away, occasionally penetrating it. Auto mode is really cool, but it unloads ALL your BBs in almost 1 to 2 pulls of the trigger and uses up all your CO2 and there you are loading up again. After about 2 cartridges more and 4 BB refills I was done, it is not worth the hassle for an automatic BB gun. I also got a UMAREX EBOS so I will attempt to use that soon and write my review.    I got this one for Christmas from one of my kids and it’s a lot of fun once you take it apart and lubricated you realize it’s a very well-made end. The looks very classic. It’s lots of fun to use in. It shoots and fully automatic very very well.

   I just happened upon this while looking at CO2 pistols for my son and was immediately drawn to it for its realistic appearance and blowback operation. I watched a few videos and showing it shooting on full auto and decided it was definitely a fun option – especially for 14 year old! When I got it I was surprised at how heavy it is. It is constructed of all die-cast metal, and I guess that’s the thing in air guns. It’s got that big, blocky, bold feel of the original, and I really like touches like the selector switch and safety lever, both designed way back when all this stuff was just being figured out. The magazine is also sturdy die-cast metal except for the threaded CO2 plug! One would think that would be the one part they would make out of honest steel, but not so. Maybe it’s because the system needs a little “give” to avoid over tightening and the metal magazine body is unyielding. As with all these blowback BB guns, the heart of it is really the magazine. That’s where the BBs go and where the CO2 cartridge goes, and where the firing valve is located. Looking closely you can see the large external hammer really impacts a solid steel “firing pin” located below the bolt and this transfers the impact to the magazine mounted CO2 Valve. I decided to do a test run so I added a drop of 3-in-1 oil to the top of a CO2 cartridge, inserted it into the magazine body and tightened down the plug being careful to not over-tighten it after I heard the hiss of gas being expelled, suddenly silenced as the O-ring sealed. I loaded up the magazine with some Zinc coated steel BBs and touched off a few shots in semi-auto. It worked perfectly! The bolt cycled back just like an original (BB adaptation of course) and re-cocked the hammer. The BBs easily penetrated two layers of umarexoutlet.com shipping box cardboard from about 12 feet out. I then rotated the selector to full-auto and sure enough, “BbbbrrrrrapP! It spewed out a half dozen BBs instantly with a quick squeeze. I double-checked the magazine to see I still had ammo and loosed another short burst, and another, and M712 performed flawlessly! I didn’t want to waste CO2, so I flipped back to semi-auto to shoot the last few BBs. Even when the gun runs out of BBs, as long as there is CO2 it will continue to cycle which can also be fun. Then a strange thing happened. I racked the bolt and saw I had one more BB in the barrel, and when I pulled the trigger nothing happened! The hammer dropped, but nothing happened. I pulled the magazine to inspect the valve, checked out the long firing pin and hammer and was totally perplexed as to why the gun suddenly refused to function! All the controls looked good…I even used the end of a large Allen wrench to press the CO2 valve and was rewarded with a powerful hiss of escaping gas so I knew the gun should work. Well, it took me a few minutes to figure out that I had manually lowered the hammer after checking the chamber. Apparently the bolt must cycle back to cock the hammer to properly “set” the firing pin and since I had been trying to shoot it by manually cocking the hammer without cycling the action nothing happened. As soon as I racked the bolt back to cock the hammer and saw the stainless steel firing pin protruding out I knew what I had been doing wrong. Sure enough, a pull on the trigger and the gun shot and cycled as designed! The problem was not the pistol but my lack of familiarity with how it works and not following the proper sequence. Time will tell how well the M712 will hold up, but it looks pretty sturdy and because it’s marketed by Umarex I know I will be able to find replacement parts if and when I need them.

   I’ve had this pistol for about a month now, and in general I’m pleased with it. The autofire feature is fun (at the expense of all accuracy!), and the gun feels substantial and well-made, but for one issue. As several other reviewers have noted, the attachment of the barrel shroud is a weak point, relying on only a tiny set screw to hold the pieces of cast metal together. This is insufficient to hold against the jarring of the gun firing, and the set screw needs to be tightened between every session. I did this a few times, but eventually the set screw wore through the metal part it’s supposed to hold. My solution was to drill out the the tapped hole for the set screw and substitute in a stainless-steel machine screw and matching nut. The nut had to be carefully shaped to fit into the narrow space between the barrel shroud and the brass tube that’s the actual barrel of the gun. I put it together with a little Loc-tite, and it’s been solid through several firing sessions. My reproduction Mauser now has an extra screw head, but I’d rather the thing stay in one piece. Anyway, three out of five stars, because of (1) the weak point in the design that (2) many people would not be prepared to address. I had the tools to deal with it; I would caution any other buyers to expect the same problem.

   The pistol is very realistic and impressive. The semi-auto and full auto modes are very neat; I like it a lot. What I dislike about this pistol: The bolt doesn’t lock back when the mag is empty. So I cannot know whether my gun is empty or not after a fully auto spray. Even after no bb is left in the mag, the gun would still fire “blank” until the CO2 cartridge is depleted because the bolt doesn’t lock back. The paint is kinda flat and unrealistic so I used 800 grit sandpaper to make the pistol to look old. I’m planning to remove the paint and cold-blue the pistol later. However, the pistol is powerful and fun to shoot with friends and family. Just check your magazine after a few shots so you dont waste any CO2 😉
